Introduction
Does an anti-ant pad work: 3 pads showing day 1, 3 and 7, with fewer ants each time

Do anti-ant pads work? Yes — for ants that climb up from the floor to reach whatever sits on the pad, as long as 3 conditions are met: the item sits in the middle of the pad, 5 cm from the edge; the pad is clean with no food crumbs; and you give the ants 1–7 days to give up their old trail.

Miss any one of these and the pad can look like it's not working even though it still is. This article covers what real users say, why ants still get in after you put the pad down, how to test it yourself in 7 days, and when to stop relying on the pad and deal with the ant nest instead.

What do people who actually use anti-ant pads say?

Hard anti-ant pads have been sold on Thai online marketplaces for years. The best-selling shop has more than ten thousand reviews, an average rating of about 4.9 out of 5, and fewer than 1% one-star reviews (figures from the Shopee product page, September 2026). Most positive reviews say the same things: "ants really don't get up" and "I've used it for a year already". Negative reviews are mostly about ants still getting in during the first few days, or the pad arriving scratched.

What these numbers tell you: the pad works for most people, but not everyone — and people who say it doesn't work are usually the ones who didn't meet all the conditions, not the ones with a faulty pad.

The number 2 cause is placing the bowl too close to the edge

Why do ants still get in after I put down an anti-ant pad?

The 5 most common causes, in order: one, food crumbs or sugary spills on the pad, so ants eat at the edge without needing to reach the bowl. Two, the bowl is too close to the edge, so ants climb from the floor straight onto the bowl. Three, the pad has been down for less than 3 days and ants still remember their old trail. Four, there's a bridge for ants to walk across, such as a tablecloth hanging to the floor, a power cord, or a wall the bowl is leaning against. Five, the pad has worn out from sun or moisture after long use.

To check: lift the bowl and look for crumbs under and around it, move the bowl to the middle of the pad, look for anything running from the floor to the items on the pad, then wait another 3 days. Only if you've done all that and ants are genuinely walking across the pad surface should you suspect the pad has worn out.

Day one: wash, air-dry, place, then don't move it

How many days does an anti-ant pad take to work?

Most manufacturers say 1–10 days. Going by user reviews, most people see clear results on days 2–4; homes with a lot of ants may need to wait up to a week. The reason is that ants follow pheromone trails left along their old route, so you have to wait for that trail to fade and for the ants to stop sending scouts. During this time, don't move the pad or the bowl around, because every move resets the count to day one.

How can I test for myself whether an anti-ant pad works?

Here's a simple 7-day test that needs no equipment. Day 0: in the morning, photograph the bowl with ants on it as a record, then wash the pad, let it dry, and put the bowl in the middle of the pad in the same spot. On days 1, 3 and 7, take a photo at the same time and count the ants "in the bowl", not around the pad. If the number in the bowl drops to zero by day 7, the pad is working. If there are still as many ants in the bowl even though you've met all the conditions, contact the shop.

KAI67 hasn't published our own test results on this page yet. We'll post real photos from days 1, 3 and 7 once the test is finished, and we won't use mock-up images in place of real results.

Water trays work instantly; pads work long-term

Is an anti-ant pad really better than a water tray?

It's better for upkeep: no refilling, no spilled water and no mosquitoes. But a water tray works "instantly" on day one, while a pad takes several days. If you need results tonight, the water tray wins. If you want something you can put down and not touch again for a year, the pad wins. Many households use both for the first week and then remove the water tray.

The pad protects what sits on it, not the whole kitchen

When won't an anti-ant pad help?

The pad won't help when ants aren't climbing up from the floor to reach what's on the pad — for example, ants coming out of a nest in the wall above the counter, ants getting into a food cabinet from the back, ants living in a plant pot that's sitting on the pad itself, or flying ants landing on things. In these cases you need to find the nest or the ants' entry point and deal with it there. The pad is only a tool for protecting individual items, not for getting rid of ants in the whole house. Other methods to use instead or alongside are covered in how to keep ants away.

Are anti-ant pads good value for the price?

A 30x42 cm pad sells for ฿99–199 on the market, and manufacturers state a lifespan of 1–2 years — that's under ฿10 a month. It's cheaper than spray you have to keep buying, and cheaper than cat food you have to throw out because ants got into it. So whether it's worth it depends on how often you have ant problems. If ants turn up every week, the pad pays for itself in the first month. If they turn up once a year, you don't need one.

What should I do if the anti-ant pad really isn't working?

Follow these steps in order. One, take a photo of the pad and bowl showing the gap to the edge. Two, wipe the pad with a damp cloth, then dry it. Three, wait a full 7 days without moving the pad. Four, if it's no better, send the photos to the shop you bought from. KAI67 customers can send photos via LINE @814ddrza and the admin will help check the placement and suggest fixes. “When the item arrived, my table was covered in ants. I tried putting it down for 2 days and it seemed like the ants weren't really coming up. Then today I was sitting chopping food, and usually black ants would be all over, but there were none — and the pad isn't even out of its bag yet. Really very good.”

“It's a big sheet and it really keeps ants off. On the first day of use it seemed like it wasn't stopping the ants, you have to leave it for 24 hours first and then the next day it starts keeping them off. If you want to save money by cutting it in half, don't, the pad will only work for two months and then the ants come back.”

“We always had ant problems on the dining table, whatever we put down ants got on it, even plain water. Tried putting this pad on the dining table and the ants are completely gone. But... the pad does have a faint smell, just a little. Not to the point you can't stand it.”

“Fast delivery, wrapped in a really big package, flash sale price, very good. We've used an old pad for years and it still works now, can be washed and cleaned any time. Ants and other insects don't get on it, left out all day and all night and still nothing gets on. Very very good 🥰”

“Got the item really fast, very well packed, item in good condition. Most importantly, no ants at all. Only used it for 2 days, very impressed. I'd already thrown away so much of my kid's food. Why didn't I know about this sooner 55555”

“Received the item fine. The anti-ant mat really works well, no lie. Ants no longer get on the food and bother my cat. There may be some crawling on the pad in the first few days, but once it's been down a while there are none.”

Anti-ant pad FAQ: do they really work?

Are anti-ant pads worth buying?

Yes for homes where ants regularly get into pet bowls or kitchen items and you don't want to spray near food. Not needed if ants only turn up once in a while.

Do anti-ant pads work on fire ants?

Most user reviews report they work on black ants, fire ants and tiny sugar ants. KAI67 hasn't tested each ant species separately, so we can't confirm it species by species yet.

Why are there ants walking all around the pad?

That's normal in the first few days. Ants are looking for a way in along their old trail. If they aren't getting into the bowl, the pad is working. Numbers drop within another 2–3 days.

Can I wipe the pad with dish soap?

Not recommended. Use only plain water and a damp cloth. Detergents and alcohol can wear down the coating faster.

Can anti-ant pads be used outdoors?

Yes, if kept out of sun and rain. In direct sunlight every day, the pad will last much less than the maker's stated lifespan.
